Cuban Jewish leader to lecture on July 31

For the first lecture in America by a Cuban Jewish leader, the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County presents David Tacher Romano, on “Cuban Jewry: From Columbus to Castro,” Sunday, July 31, at 2 p.m., at HMTC, Welwyn Preserve, 100 Crescent Beach Road in Glen Cove.

David Tacher Romano, president of the Or Jadash Jewish Community in Santa Clara, Cuba will address the history of Jews in Cuba which spans more than 500 years and encompasses refugees from the Iberian Peninsula, the Ottoman Empire, and Nazi-occupied Europe.  

Romano will illustrate the diversity within the Jewish community and how Jews both assimilated and stood-apart throughout the changing history of Cuba and the Communist revolution.

Romano was born in Havana and founded Or Jadash in 1995. 

As president, he ensured the reconstruction of the Santa Clara Jewish Cemetery, he organized the first ecumenical conference between Roman Catholics and Jews, he created the first Holocaust Memorial in Cuba, and he established the Am Shalom Community Center in Santa Clara.
