This October, local residents of East Hills have initiated a novel and noble program to give costumes to kids who would not otherwise have them at Halloween.
The costumes will be given to children in Roslyn Plaza and Laurel areas. Sean T. Rainey, executive director of the North Hempstead Housing Authority offered invaluable assistance in ferreting out dozens of children ranging in ages from eight months to twelve years old who needed a costume.
The children provided their first and second choice of costumes. Requests ranged from Peppa Pip to Princesses to Paw Patrol characters.
Local residents who signed up via email to “sponsor” children purchased brand new costumes the children requested along with either a trick-or-treat bag, glow sticks, or Halloween books.
Clara Pomerantz, a trustee for the Village of East Hills, helped launch the program with East Hills residents Chloe and Jordan Siegel, aged 13 and 11 respectively. The trio hopes to continue the costume drive annually at Halloween. Contact costumedrive2019@yahoo.com to lend support.
