Man killed on Covert Ave. by drunk driver: Cops

A 55-year-old man driving on Covert Avenue in New Hyde Park with his wife and daughter was killed late Tuesday night in a collision with a car being driven by an intoxicated 17-year-old New Hyde Park man, Nassau County police said. 

The unidentified victim was driving southbound on Covert Avenue in a 2012 Ford Fusion approaching the Long Island Railroad crossing with his 38-year-old wife and six-year-old daughter, detectives said.

His car were struck by a 2003 Toyota Camry driven by Deepak Kumar of  1410 South Park Place in New Hyde Park, which was  moving westbound on Second Avenue into the intersection at Covert Avenue at approximately 11:30 p.m. 

The victim’s wife, who was found unconscious and their daughter, who suffered a fractured leg, were transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Police said Kumar, who as driving with four passengers in the car, was intoxicated when they arrived at the accident scene. He was placed under arrest at the scene and transported to an area hospital for observation, police said. 

No other injuries were reported and both vehicles were impounded for brake and safety checks, police said.

Police said Kumar is charged with vehicular manslaughter 2nd degree and driving while ability impaired by drugs. 

He was scheduled to be arraigned in 1st District Court in Hempstead on Aug. 21, according to the county district attorney’s office.
