Nassau County Legislator Ellen W. Birnbaum (D – Great Neck) joined her colleagues in government and Jewish community leaders on Tuesday, Sept. 18 to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the Yom Kippur War during a ceremony at the Museum of American Armor in Old Bethpage.

During the ceremony, prayers for the fallen were offered beside an Israeli M48 tank from the museum’s collection that survived the Oct. 6-25, 1973 conflict. Participants in the ceremony included Yuval Neria with Legislator Birnbaum and Rabbi Harvey Abramowitz, Rabbi Emeritus of Jericho’s Temple Or Elohim, who is now a doctor at Columbia University Medical Center and nationally respected expert on PTS. During the Yom Kippur War Neria was an Israeli tank battalion commander.

“I thank the leaders of the Museum of American Armor for hosting this ceremony and bringing attention to the Yom Kippur War on its 45th anniversary,” Birnbaum said. “More than ever, it is critically important to learn from the lessons of history and apply them to making the world a better, more peaceful place where dialogue prevails over violence.”
