Carle Place defeats Wheatley Wildcats 4-1

The Island Now

The Carle Place Frogs defeated the Wheatley Wildcats 4-1 on Friday afternoon.

Tommy Browne paced Carle Place’s offense with two goals and one assist. Wheatley junior forward Alec Marcus scored the lone goal while junior goalkeeper Zach Jacobs recorded 12 saves.

Wheatley head coach Steve Cadet said the Wildcats came out flat and made too many mistakes that cost them the game.

“We had a game plan and we didn’t execute,” Cadet said. “We had too many missed chances that gave them a second or third opportunity on the ball. It was hard for our offense to get started.”

In the first half, Carle Place had the advantage in shots and possession of play.

They put a lot of pressure on Jacobs and Wheatley’s defense in the attacking third and scored two goals in the first half by capitalizing on Wheatley’s sloppy play inside the box.

Browne gave Carle Place a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute on a penalty kick. Five minutes later, Carle Place struck again with a goal by Jon Flecker to make it 2-0.

Midway through the first half, Wheatley sophomore forward Nick Tagios was taken out of the game due to an injury.

This forced Wheatley to play the rest of the game without their top scoring threat.

Marcus said losing Tagios’ offensive touch affected their play in the match.

“I think he’s one of the best players in the county, no doubt about it,” Marcus said.  “It was definitely harder to play without him. He’s a great player.”

In the second half, Marcus got Wheatley on the board with a goal at the 56th minute to cut the lead 2-1. Senior forward Josh Wolff assisted on the goal.

Carle Place responded with two more quick goals at the 65th and 67 minute. Marc Chappone scored the third goal with an assist from Anthony Buffolino while Browne’s second goal of the game gave Carle Place a 4-1 cushion.

After the game, Cadet said the team played better after Marcus’ goal and things could have changed if they tied the game.

“I felt confident that we might have gotten a tie out of this game,” Cadet said. “Then they made a mistake and it led to the third goal. We don’t want to give them free goals.”
