Twelve Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department firefighters were dispatched to the intersection of South Middle Neck Road and Great Neck Road Saturday evening after a car erupted in flames.

Capt. Lee Genser there was one injury related to the accident, but it did not involve a firefighter or anyone in the car.

“There was nobody directly injured as a result of the fire, but a bystander was struck by a ‘rubber-necker’ and that person was taken to a hospital by a Manhasset-Lakeville ambulance,” Genser said. “She sustained non-life threatening injuries.”

Genser said M-LFD Deputy Chief William Mazurkiewicz was the first to respond to the scene around 8:26 p.m.

Fire Company #3 firefighters were initially dispatched to the scene, but after Mazurkiewicz arrived Company #4 firefighters to the call as well, Genser said.

Genser said he was unsure on what type of car was on fire, as it was already fully engulfed in flames as he arrived on science, but believed it was an “older model possibly from the 1980s.”

He said the cause of the fire remains unknown.

Genser said the fire was extinguished in about 30 minutes.
