Candidates to square off for M-LFWD seat

A Manhasset Park District commissioner and former Nassau County legislator will square off next month in an election to determine the successor to a Manhasset-Lakeville Fire and Water District commissioner who is stepping down at the end of his term.

Republican Mark Sauvigne, of Munsey Park, and Democrat Lisanne Altmann, of Great Neck, have each filed petitions seeking to fill the position currently held by Andrew DeMartin, who told Blank Slate Media last month he would not pursue re-election because “there are other avenues in my life I want to explore.”

Altmann spent 12 years in the Nassau County Legislature before opting not to seek re-election in 2007. She was succeeded in office by Judi Bosworth, now the North Hempstead town supervisor.

Altmann is now an account manager for PSEG Long Island.

Sauvigne is a government bond trader with Mizuho Securities USA Inc. in Manhattan.

The Manhasset-Lakeville Fire and Water District covers Manhasset and parts of Great Neck and north New Hyde Park. Commissioner terms are for three years.

The deadline to file election petitions was Monday.

DeMartin, the Town of North Hempstead’s public safety commissioner, was appointed Manhasset-Lakeville commissioner in May 2008 and won a special election that December. He was re-elected in 2011.

The Manhasset-Lakeville Fire and Water District was heavily criticized last year by Village of Munsey Park residents for what they said was a lack of notice in erecting a 190-foot communications antenna atop its elevated water tower within the village – a project that cost more than $200,000. The water and fire district later removed the antenna from atop the water tower.

The two sides later became embroiled in litigation over the replacement of the water tower.

The water district proposed a tower of the same height that could hold 200,000 more gallons of water, but the village sued, seeking an injunction against the start of construction, arguing that Manhasset-Lakeville did not exhaust all possible project alternatives.

In other developments:

• Three candidates have filed petitions for a Manhasset Park District commissioner position up for election in December.

Jay Hernandez, who was appointed last year to fill the position vacated by former Commissioner John Regan, who moved out of Manhasset, is seeking a full his first three-year term.

He is being challenged by Matthew Falcone, commander of American Legion Post 304 in Manhasset, and Kenneth Weigand, a global account executive at  Canon Inc.
