Building pendulums at Hillside Grade School

The Island Now

Fifth-grade engineers at Hillside Grade School tested the relationship between kinetic and potential energy by building pendulums in their STEAM class.

The students used Fusion 360 software and sophisticated VEX robotics kits to build the object. Once all the pendulums are created, the class will record them in SLO-MO capture with iPads to note their findings in their science logs.

The class is in the “explore phase” of the Engineering Design Process. The culminating STEAM project will be creating a crash prevention system with a vehicle and an egg.

The New Hyde Park-Garden City Park Union Free School District offers STEAM lessons at each of the four schools through Project Lead the Way.
