Readers Write: Bosworth, Wink right on building dept. fix

The Island Now

I read with interest the recent article regarding the plan of [Nassau County] Legislator Judi Bosworth and [Nassau County] Legislator Wayne Wink to reform and improve the Town of North Hempstead’s troubled Building Department.

Bosworth and Wink are running for the two top positions in Town Hall (supervisor and town clerk), so it makes sense for them to address this important issue.

Too many people have suffered at the hands of the building department bureaucracy and there is no real debate that the department has major shortcomings.

It’s past time to get it fixed and the Bosworth/Wink plan has some forward-thinking elements in it that give me some confidence they have the ability and commitment to take on the challenge.

I also noted in the same article what seemed to me to be a “sour grapes” attitude on the part of Councilwoman Degiorgio, who is Bosworth’s opponent in the supervisor’s race.

While the councilwoman claims she has been “advocating…change”, the reality is that I searched the internet and found nothing from her in terms of specific proposals or legislation on the subject of fixing the building department.

It seems to me that two years on the Town Board was enough time to come up with some kind of detailed plan.

I don’t criticize Councilwoman Degiorgio for apparently having done nothing to improve the building department during her time on the Town Board – that’s her business. It just that, as a reader, I take exception to her trying to leave the impression that she’s accomplished something.

A solid, thoughtful approach to revamping the North Hempstead Building Department is long overdue.

Hats off to Bosworth and Wink for moving the conversation in a positive and honest direction.
