Readers Write: Bird-brained Plandome trustees ban hens

The Island Now

In behalf of the 6,000 hens [not roosters] that live in New York City as well as the ones that live across Nassau County, I think your paper should apologize for the reporting that hens are noisy and unsanitary. If you have a compost pile it would be the same thing as five hens in the yard.  And yes, hens are legal in New York City!

Shame on you for not doing the slightest research in the habits of chickens or the benefits of ownership, picking up a phone and calling me or any other person that keeps chickens. I am already receiving calls about ‘what type of hens’ did I own that were noisy.

Stop spreading this chicken manure… you cities folks are so annoying.

Hens are not noisy. Hens are not smelly.

It is sad that Trustees of Village of Plandome and that mayor can be so ill informed and mislead by hearsay in town meeting. A quick interview with their very own village “enforcer” would confirm these facts it took him two visits to confirm I even had birds.

Plus even a little reading on the net would conform to this board that this is the case with hens. Sadly, they have failed to do their jobs.

Most kids had never touched a live bird much less held one. The hens were a big hit with everyone [except one dubious denizen] but most importantly the kids realized chicken did not come on the grocery store shelf wrapped in plastic!

These birds were ordered by from Murray McMurray Hatchery. See the site: www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/

These were fancy yard strollers we ordered only to be banished.

I doubt you recall that we had until the 1990s massive frog hatches each spring. Little hoppers everywhere and kids, even little girls marveled at these little spring arrivals.

The yard and hedge rows were filled with these frogs and the bugs were held in check. We do not apply any chemicals to our yard or trees. We have composted everything for 25 years.

Nowadays many neighbors have since poured all manner of poison on the lawns to kill god only knows what and the frogs seemed to have been a victim.  It seems now we have more bugs and electric bug zappers.. That is a poor trade off; we wanted to add chickens to the effort to kill the bugs and have tasty fresh eggs.

I guess the take away is Plandome Manor is not a green place to live.
