The Village of Baxter Estates will have road work done on Hilltop Road this fall, Mayor Nora Haagenson said during Thursday’s Board of Trustees meeting.
The village is planning on doing work on all of the roads in the village, thanks to a $250,000 grant obtained by state Sen. Elaine Phillips for transportation, infrastructure, and economic assistance. The trustees accepted a bid to begin work on Hilltop, which was in the worst shape
“We think we have the money to do most of them,” Haagenson said.
Other infrastructure work approved by the board was the installation of LED lights at the intersection of North Washington Street and Locust Avenue, a contract to replace the windows in Village Hall, and the purchase of a storage shed.
The board approved one new law, which amended the definition of “floor area” in the village code.
Under the current code, both cellars and basements count toward the floor area of a building. The village defines basements as being 50 percent above the surrounding grade while cellars are 50 percent below.
The decision to change the law came at the behest of the village’s building inspector.
“His sense was that any floor that’s more than halfway below grade should not count against floor area,” said village attorney Chris Prior.
The local law was approved unanimously by the board.
The trustees also voted to purchase dinner tickets and a journal advertisement for the Nassau County Village Officials Dinner on Sept. 20.
Trustee Chris Ficalora said the village should not be spending taxpayer money on the dinner, but Haagenson said the village had budgeted for it and it would let the trustees meet with county officials who could help with funding.
The board eventually voted to approve the tickets and the ad, which cost $750.
