In honor of Autism Acceptance Month, Garden City Park School is hosting its annual
fundraiser to support Autism Speaks, from April 16 to May 19. The fundraiser is organized by teachers Anne Schneider and Dena Zornberg.
Autism Speaks representative Carla Sterling spoke about the organization’s mission to students and staff during the fundraiser’s virtual kickoff. Both in-person and virtual students are able to donate through the school’s personal page on the Autism Speaks website. Each class is also participating by coloring puzzle pieces, a symbol that represents autism, and displaying them around the school building and on social media.
Principal Amy Sullivan and physical education teacher Nicholas Mercurio volunteered to be silly-stringed at the conclusion of the fundraiser. One student from each class, either in-person or remote, will have the opportunity to be chosen to silly string either staff member.
As of May 10, the school has raised $1,371.45 for Autism Speaks, surpassing their goal of $500.
“We are so grateful to have so many of our students and faculty generously donating to such a worthy cause,” Schneider said.
