Art Guild seeks art inspired by animals

The Island Now

The Art Guild invites all artists to submit artworks for consideration for “Fur Fins and Feathers: Art Inspired by the Animal Kingdom” a Juried Competition and Exhibition on view Aug. 27 – Sept. 18.

More than just tributes to pets, animals in art often symbolize ideas from political to moral.

From cave drawings to faithful companions, the noble steads of generals to Japanese fish prints and Audubon’s portfolios, animals of all kinds have “captured” the imagination of artists throughout history.

The Juror-of-Awards is Denis Ponsot, an artist with more than 35 years of experience in the field.

He teaches classes in watercolor painting at the Art League of Long Island, The School of Visual Arts and the Jewish Community Center in Manhattan.

Ponsot also teaches classes in watercolor and oil painting at the Gurwin Jewish Assistive Living Residences.

During the school year, he teaches classes for all ages out of his private studio in Queens.

Come summertime, his studio transforms into Denis Ponsot Fine Arts Summer Camp, where students gain experience in every medium from sculpture to collage.

Ponsot’s work has been featured in exhibitions at the Art League of Long Island Members Exhibition and the Salmagundi Art Club non-member Juried Exhibition.

All artists, 18 years and older (high school students ages 14-18 years may enter in the student category), are invited to submit up to three artworks for consideration. All styles from abstract to realism are welcome.

The deadline for submissions is midnight Aug. 5. For more information, registration form, or to register on line, please visit The Art Guild’s website at www.TheArtGuild.org.

The exhibit will be on view in The Art Guild’s gallery at Elderfields Preserve at 200 Port Washington Blvd., in Manhasset, from Saturday, Aug. 27 through Sunday, Sept. 18.

Gallery hours are Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. or by appointment.

An artists’ reception and awards ceremony will be held on Sunday, Sept. 11, from 3 to 5 p.m.

In addition to gallery exhibits, The Art Guild holds classes year-round for children and adults.

A six-week class for adults, Drawing for Adults with Barbara Silbert, begins Thursday July 21, from 10 a.m. to noon.

A workshop with acclaimed watercolorist Antonio Masi, The Untapped Power of Watercolor, will take place Aug. 5 through 7.
