A Hempstead woman was arrested on Sunday for allegedly driving drunk on the Long Island Expressway in East Hills, according to Nassau County Police.

The Highway Patrol Bureau responded to a car accident around 3:30 p.m. on the exit 38 ramp off the expressway, police said.

At the scene, officers found 24-year-old Ambar Chavez had driven her 2001 Mazda in the wrong direction and struck a 51-year-old driver with a passenger in a 2004 Lexus, police said.

Both cars had extensive front-end damage.

Upon investigating, police said, Chavez was found to be under the influence of alcohol, and the officers placed her into custody.

The driver and passenger in the Lexus said they had neck and back pain as a result of the crash, but did not accept medical attention, police said. Chavez had no injuries.

Chavez was charged with two counts of driving while intoxicated and possession of marijuana.

She was arraigned in First District Court the same day, and will next appear on Oct. 18.
