American Education Week at John Lewis Childs

The Island Now

John Lewis Childs School first-graders and their parents took part in a Read In during American Education Week, which was celebrated at the school from Nov. 13 to 15. The annual initiative invites parents into classrooms to get an inside look at what children are learning.

During the Read In, parents sat on the floor around the hallways reading a variety of books to the students. Another grade-level activity was a Thanksgiving scavenger hunt for 3rd graders and their special guests, with students and their parents traveling around their classrooms reading fact cards about Native Americans, pilgrims, the first Thanksgiving and modern-day traditions, and then answering questions about the cards using reading comprehension strategies.

In 4th grade, classes took part in a compare and contrast activity using the app Seesaw. Students took a picture with and compared themselves to their special visitor. They then compared some of their favorite things such as hobbies, nicknames and books. Special visitors had to think back to when they were in fourth grade to answer the questions.

In grade 6, class activities varied. Parents looked on as students learned new vocabulary words, performed skits, shared self-written memoirs and showed off science videos that were created on their iPads.
