Alternate Manhattan travel options

The Island Now

If Long Island Railroad workers go on strike on July 20, here’s how you can get to Manhattan:

• Carpool with friends and coworkers and park at one of 4,000 spaces at Citi Field to catch the 7 train or at one of 3,000 spaces at Aqueduct Racetrack to catch the A train. An additional 8,400 spaces in Nassau and Suffolk counties – including at North Hempstead Beach Park and the Town of North Hempstead’s iPark facility at 1305 Union Turnpike in New Hyde Park – will also be available, as well as 100 parking lots located within five blocks of subway stations in Queens and Brooklyn.

• Drive. The high-occupancy vehicle lane of the Long Island Expressway will require a driver and two passengers per car, and the state  Department of Transportation will allocate 50 portable message signs to be placed along the side of the road to provide commuters with real-time traffic updates.

• Take a shuttle bus. Shuttle bus service will be provided at Long Island Railroad stations in Manhasset Hicksville, Deer Park, Ronkonkoma, Seaford, Bellmore and Freeport, as well as at Nassau Community College between 4-7 a.m. and 3-7 p.m.

Commuters at Manhasseet, Deer Park and Ronkonkoma would be taken to Citi Field for the 7 train, while Hicksville riders would be taken to the Woodhaven Boulevard station for the M and R trains and commuters at Seaford, Freeport, Bellmore and Nassau Community College would be taken to the Howard Beach subway station to pick up the A train, he said.

• Ferry service. Take a ferry system from Glen Cove to East 34th Street, which will accommodate up to 1,000 commuters per trip for three trips during peak morning rush hour. It will also make three return trips during evening rush hour.

• Telecommute to your place of business.
