Alex Katlan to talk on his latest book on art

The Island Now

On Sunday, Dec. 13 esteemed art conservator Alex Katlan will present an informative art talk based on his book “The Palette Reveals the Artist: The Grumbacher Artist Palette Collection and the Salmagundi Club Palette Collection.”

The event takes place 2 p.m. in the Art League of Long Island’s Jeanie Tengelsen Galler

The palette collection of the historic Salmagundi Club represents a piece of art history. Many well-known artists of the past 140 years such as William Merrit Chase, Charles Henry Miller, and George Inness Jr. have participated in the club tradition of leaving their palettes for display at the iconic brownstone in Greenwich Village.

What makes palettes a prized part of a collection is that as a piece of art history they provide insight into the artists’ unique styles, and as artwork they may be “working” or “demonstration” palettes painted with beautiful images.  Over time the prized palettes aged and fell into disrepair.  Enter art conservator and Salmagundi Club member Alex Katlan to rescue the works.  A renowned conservator in his own right, Katlan painstakingly restored most of the collection to its original glory.

Katlan will discuss his experience and share his knowledge of the business of Art Conservation, filled with interesting anecdotes on his experiences throughout his career. He will address issues that will interest both artists and art collectors.

This lecture is the perfect opportunity for artists and art lovers to meet a distinguished professional in the art world. To learn more about Alex Katlan’s conservation services and accomplishments, including his Salmagundi Club Medal of Honor and Merit, visit www.alexanderkatlan.com.
