Adelphi University’s Office of Residential Life and Housing has begun a new program called “living-learning communities” to provide students with a safe, inclusive environment that supports learning and development.
The First-Year Living-Learning Community is designed to promote personal and professional development, in addition to encouraging students to get involved in their campus and global communities.
“The four-credit First-Year Seminar course introduces first-year students to intellectual life at Adelphi University by providing them with a learning experience that exposes them to exciting and challenging ideas in a seminar format in a classroom steps from their bedrooms- in their residence hall,” Adam Visconti, associate director of residential life and housing, said.
Through their engagement in residential programming and the Leadership Certificate Program, students can develop leadership skills and further connect their learning inside and outside the classroom.
“I really do enjoy being in the Living-Learning Community,” first-year student ElanaRose Bravin said. “The ability to take a class right outside my room is an amazing and unique opportunity.”
The Living-Learning Communities mean that students can have greater interaction with professors and classmates and special access to study lounges where they can build relationships with fellow residents.
“Studies show that students involved in programs like these have higher retention rates, higher engagement, an increased sense of belonging, and higher GPAs,” Visconti said.
