Acts of kindness fill Willets Road school

The Island Now
During SPARK week, Willets Road students were Powered by Kindness as they dressed up as their favorite superhero.

“Here, let me help you with that.” “I have a pencil you can borrow.” “Come sit with us!” These were some of the many things heard around the halls of Willets Road School during SPARK (Success, Pride, Action, Respect, and Kindness) week.

Students and staff were tasked with The Great Kindness Challenge, aimed at empowering students to create a culture of kindness. The Great Kindness Challenge was started in 2011 by the global nonprofit organization Kids for Peace.

Since starting out small in southern California many years ago, this inspirational challenge has reached a global scale. Last year, over 13 million students in over 27,000 schools made the choice to spread random acts of kindness. This year the numbers are even more impressive, and the Willets Road community was proud to join this movement.

Along with completing as many acts of kindness as they could throughout the week, students also participated in theme days such as Krazy for Kindness (wear crazy hats/hair/socks or mismatched clothes), Team Kindness (wear schools colors of red and white), Wild for Kindness (wear animal print), Powered by Kindness (dress like a superhero) and Dream of Kindness (wear pajamas).

This is yet another example of how the Social and Emotional initiative of East Williston School District has SPARKED and inspired the staff and students of Willets Road to do greater and kinder acts.
