Actress Helen Mirren, the subject of an upcoming talk

The Island Now

Dame Hellen Mirren, an actress of extraordinary range and intelligence, was once told by a fortune teller that she would achieve her greatest success after the age of 40. Beginning her career in the Royal Shakespeare Company at 18, she would go on to make more than 125 appearances in movies and television.

One of 15 actresses to have won the “triple crown of acting” (Oscar, Emmy and Tony), Mirren has played a queen six times in her career. According to Prince William, her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II is “so convincing I should probably call her Granny.”

Mirren will be the subject of an upcoming program and video presentation, Helen Mirren: A Queen In Her Own Right, given by lecturer Marilyn Carminio at Landmark on Main Street on Wednesday, March 13 at 2 p.m., as part of their free Afternoon T.E.A. series.

Carminio will highlight Mirren’s career and her candid personal revelations about coming of age in the turbulent 1960’s, living in the limelight, her sensual screen persona, love, men, marriage, children and navigating life’s journey. Warm, witty, smart and stylish, Mirren remains a symbol of aging gracefully and a force of nature.

Carminio has worked for many years at an international law firm where she developed and presented client service training programs. She began her career as a New York City schoolteacher and went on to hold various positions at women’s magazines, including Cosmopolitan, where she worked for Helen Gurley Brown, Elle and New Woman. She has lectured at venues such as The Hutton House Lecture Series at C.W. Post, libraries throughout Long Island, the Roslyn Historical Society, Meadowbrook Pointe in Westbury, the Meadowbrook Women’s Initiative, Hadassah groups and women’s clubs.

Carminio puts her heart and soul into preparing her multimedia presentations and selects subjects for which she has a passion, which is richly conveyed through to the audience. Refreshments, provided by SerendipiTEA, will be served.

Landmark on Main Street is at 232 Main St. in Port Washington.
