Our Views: A little good news

The Island Now

Amidst the crime, corruption and political fighting, we all needed a story with a very happy ending.

On Christmas Eve a very pregnant Karen Hollander made a visit to her bank in Great Neck.  As she walked to her car, the 40-year-old mom-to-be began feeling contractions.

She called 911 “because [she] wanted them to know I was in, sort of, an emergency situation.” She then called her husband.

Within minutes the Nassau County police and an ambulance crew were at her side. The baby who just couldn’t wait was delivered in the ambulance.

When her husband made it to the emergency room at North Shore University Hospital, he found Karen holding their healthy new baby who arrived two weeks early.

This is a very happy story because everyone did their part. The  911 operator was able to quickly get the police and EMS to Karen. The ambulance technicians did what they have been trained to do.

A police officer told reporters, “It was a great outcome. Healthy baby and the holidays, you couldn’t ask for more.”  He got that right.

We congratulate the Hollanders and everyone who helped turn a frightening situation into very good news.
