The King and Queen of Jazz: Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald  presented by Marilyn Carminio at Main

Marilyn Carminio will give a multimedia presentation about two of the greatest musicians in the history of the 20th century – Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald, on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 2:00 P.M. in the Main Library’s Community Room, 159 Bayview Avenue. Come and swing to the joy that is Louis and Ella. Marilyn Carminio was a NYC teacher and then went on to work in magazine publishing, including working for Helen Gurley Brown of Cosmopolitan.

 

Matinee Film at Main

The next Wednesday Matinee, an uplifting comedy about a woman who moves into a retirement community and starts a cheerleading squad with fellow residents, will be shown on Oct. 16 at 2:00 P.M. at the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue.

 

College Essay Writing 101 at Main 

Attend College Essay Writing 101 with a Curvebreakers Test Prep expert on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 7:00 P.M. in the Main Library’s Large Multipurpose Room, 159 Bayview Avenue.

They will outline the major pitfalls students make and also how to be successful in choosing your essay topic. Wow college application readers with essay topics that show the best qualities you possess.  Parents are welcome to attend.

 

Finance Committee Meeting at Main

The Board of Trustees will hold a Finance Committee meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 7:00 P.M. in the Small Multipurpose Room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue. All are welcome and encouraged to attend. Confirm with the Library at (516) 466-8055 that there has been no change in meeting date, time or location.

Mindfulness Meditation facilitated by Carolyn Carpentiere at Main

Join Carolyn Carpentiere for Mindfulness Meditation on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 7:15 P.M. in the Main Library’s Community Room, 159 Bayview Avenue. Meditation is a practice that strengthens our focus and attention, as well as releases stress to stay healthy. Open to all skill levels. Bring a mat or use a library chair that will be available.

Carolyn received her 200-hour yoga certification at Long Island Yoga School in 2009 and has continued to work in and study many other holistic solutions to health including Mindfulness Meditation and Reiki.

 

Encore Film at Station

The next encore film, an uplifting comedy about a woman who moves into a retirement community and starts a cheerleading squad with fellow residents, will be shown on Thursday, Oct. 17 at 2:00 P.M. at the Station Branch, 26 Great Neck Road (2nd level), above Best Market.

 

The Great Give Back Tech Hour Teen Training at Main

Community Service Sign Up. This is a Teens Only opportunity. Volunteer to help create an amazing technology project as part of the Great Give Back. The Great Give Back Tech Hour is on Thursday, Oct. 24 from 4:00 to 5:00 P.M. You will help the Great Neck Library community with technology in the STEM Lab.

Great Neck Library October 28, 2019 Election Information

Eligible voters will elect one person to the Board of Trustees for a four-year term (Jan. 2020 -Jan. 2024) and one person to the Nominating Committee for a three-year term (Jan. 2020 – Jan. 2023) to fill the seats that will be expiring in Jan. 2020. Those elected will take office at the Library Association Annual Reorganization Meeting in Jan. 2020.

Candidates: Board of Trustees – For expiring seat of Scott J. Sontag, Nominating Committee Candidate: Scott J. Sontag. Nominating Committee – For expiring seat of Patrick McDonnell, Nominating Committee Candidate: Steve M. Jacob.

Voter Eligibility: In order to vote, you must be 18 years of age or older, a resident of the Great Neck School District and either a valid Library cardholder by the Record Date of Oct. 7, 2019, or a registered voter with the Nassau County Board of Elections.

To obtain a valid Great Neck Library card, present one form of identification showing your name and Library School District address at the Circulation Desk of any Great Neck Library location.

In-person voting will be held on Monday, Oct. 28 from 10:00 A.M. to 10:00 P.M. Voting sites are the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue, Great Neck 11023 for those residents who live north of Northern Boulevard; and the Parkville Branch Library, 10 Campbell Street (off Lakeville Road), New Hyde Park 11040 for residents who live south of Northern Boulevard.

Voting by Proxy: Proxies must be requested on a form provided by the Library. Proxy request forms are available at all Great Neck Library locations, on the Library’s website at greatnecklibrary.org and also in the Library’s Newsletter. Oct. 22 is the last day for the Library to mail Proxy Ballots. Arrangements will be made by the Director’s Office for Proxies to be picked up in person for proxy requests received after this date. Completed Proxies must be received at the Main Post Office on Welwyn Road by Oct. 25 before 5:00 P.M. or deposited in a locked box at Main or the Branches before 5:00 P.M. on this date.

Great Neck Library Closing/Cancellation Information Online

Library patrons connected to the Internet are asked to check the website: www.cancellations.com for Library weather-related closings/program cancellations.

In order to access this service, Library District residents can log on to cancellations.com, type in their zip code or Great Neck Library and obtain information on program cancellations or Library closings. In addition, at no charge, residents can request automatic e-mails from cancellations.com when the Library has posted any information. This is a great way for Library District residents who are connected online to be advised of weather-related changes in Library hours or programs.
