Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

Ryan Kriftcher of Port Washington is a member of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute men’s basketball team and has helped the Engineers win five of their first six games, including a 2-0 record in the Liberty League.

SUNY Oneonta

Julia Langro and Karlo Vlahek, both of Port Washington, were among 61 SUNY Oneonta students received the Richard Siegfried Student Award this semester for earning a total GPA of 3.9 or higher.

The students received their awards Dec. 5 during the Annual Richard Siegfried Lecture at the Morris Conference Center. 

In order to be eligible to receive the Richard Siegfried Student Award, a student must be a full-time freshman or transfer student with a total GPA of 3.9 or higher.

SUNY Oneonta

Jolie Widawsky of Great Neck is one of 32 SUNY Oneonta students studying abroad this semester. Widawsky, a junior majoring in dietetics, is studying at Florence University of the Arts in Italy.

Union College

Sarah Kaplan of Great Neck is traveling during winter break on a Union College mini term.

Kaplan, a member of the Class of 2019 majoring in economics, is completing the India mini term, studying Indian politics, heritage, history and culture.

MCPHS University

Jeh-Hong Lin of Great Neck was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Lin was initiated at MCPHS University.Western New England University

Mallory M. Donelan of Mineola received the College of Business Dean’s Academic Achievement Award during Convocation ceremonies at Western New England University.

Donelan is working toward a degree in Accounting.

The Dean’s Academic Award is presented to students within the College of Business entering sophomore year who have the highest cumulative grade-point average after two semesters of full-time study and have a high regard for scholarship.

New York Army National Guard

Major General Anthony P. German, the adjutant general for the State of New York, announces the promotion of members of the New York Army National Guard in recognition of their capability for additional responsibility and leadership.

Benjamin Ngo from Great Neck and assigned to the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 27th Brigade Special Troops Battalion received a promotion to the rank of Private First Class.

Sungkyu Park from Great Neck and assigned to the Company B, 1-69th Infantry received a promotion to the rank of Private First Class.

Army National Guard promotions are based on overall performance, attitude, leadership ability, and development potential.

These promotions additionally recognize the best qualified Soldiers and attract and retain the highest caliber Citizen Soldiers for a career in the New York Army National Guard.

UAlbany

More than 500 new Living-Learning Community students spent one of their first weekends at UAlbany volunteering on-campus and in the City of Albany through opportunities provided by the Living-Learning Community Connections weekend.

On Saturday, Sept. 16, about 250 students volunteered to support Albany Medical Center, The Capital City Rescue Mission, CHIME (an after school music program), and the Red Bookshelf Project. Students also wrote letters to active military members.

Another 250 students volunteered on Sunday, Sept. 17, at various locations in the local community. This included working with the Central Ave Business Improvement District to refurbish the city’s hanging planters and recycle compostable materials for St. Anne Institute’s gardening program, volunteering on various projects in Albany’s South End, and supporting the Pine Hills Neighborhood’s “Meet, Munch, and More” community event.

The student volunteers include the following students from New Hyde Park:

Aditya Arora,  Kayla Jethoo, Shrey Koya, Ashveen Mahi, Elizabeth O’Brien, Sehajbir Randhawa , Riya Sharma and Nina Siton.
