7-Eleven in Village of GN not needed

The Island Now

I am a bit upset with the opinion column, “Our views-there goes the neighborhood” (June 29)

It states that people coming home from working the night shift might appreciate the opportunity to purchase a Big Gulp or coffee, or beer.

They already can! LimeLite sells fresh flowers, soda, coffee, beer, milk, fruit, snacks and has a deli counter, they are open 24 hours a day, they are trying to make a living, they offer employment opportunities.

Why would we essentially put them out of business? They also have their share of police calls to deal with loitering. There’s a small convenience store near the Post Office above Great Neck Chemists (also plagued with loitering problems).

Why would we want to put two local mom-and-pop operations out of business for a corporate chain, and more opportunity for loitering?

RiteAid is also open 24 hours, with corporate employment opportunities, and any emergency supply you could possibly need.

Anyone heading out from Kings Point for late night supplies is already in their car; Lime Lite and RiteAid are just a minute further down the road, both closer to the middle of our town geographically.

A 7-Eleven on Northern Boulevard would certainly be more visible and make more sense. People in Lake Success, Russell Gardens, University Gardens and the Plaza wouldn’t have to travel to New Hyde Park or Queens, they could head to the boulevard for 24-hour supplies, they certainly wouldn’t head way up north to Steamboat and Middle Neck for toilet paper, formula, beer or whatever it is they may need at 4 a.m.!

Adding a 7-Eleven to the north end of Great Neck will surely put a few more struggling shops out of business, is this what we really want? We all need to step up and make our voices heard and our opinions count.
